DRM is a way to protect an easy-copiable- media. A binary file (like mp3) is by nature reproductible as many time as needed. But One little girl of 14 years old who bought her favorite artist CD could pass it to her friends (best or not), easily and proudly. Off course, Majors want to protect their business and many artists speak about theirs loses. And DRM appears.

DRM is any of several technologies used by publishers (or copyright owners) to control access to and usage of digital data (such as software, music, movies) and hardware, handling usage restrictions associated with a specific instance of a digital work.
So it can be incompatible with old stuff.
