Identity Theft, an important issue on the Internet.

The United States Department of Justice has spoken : "Identity theft and identity fraud are terms used to refer to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person's personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain." Oh yes !

Let's try to make it common. When you are connected on the Internet, informations are send throught wifi or cable to your Internet Service Provider. Then these infos are diffused though many differents servers to reach the final target. For example when talk to someone on MSN : you're sending info to your gateway, to your isp, to msn server, to your chat partner's ISP, chat partner's Gateway, to your chat partner PC. And ?And yes, it is easy for a hacker to monitor your conversation if he got and entry to one of these intermediary.
That's why managers can easily keep an eye on their employees by knowing what are they doing on their PC, where they are surfing, and in a way : what they are thinking. By "sniffing" informations on a network, you can catch everything, msn log, mail password, mail itself, http request. And off course one of the best way to stay anonymous is to encrypt what you are saying. So you can perhaps developp your own language with some friends, by changing all the letters of the alphabet by another. (A is in fact B, B is C etc...). But you may loose your friend...The other if do not want someone to get your information, is to encrypt with a software.

This type of software use algorythms more efficient than just changing letter by another. And it would take a long time and an expensive PC to decrypt quickly. Although many problems are deriving from this technic. If you loose the "key" to encrypt and decrypt your mail, you can't read them. Or if you let a sheet of paper with this "key", anyone will have access to your encrypted mail... Etc.. So it is not perfect. With a bit of discipline and an ounce of paranoia, you make your life a real science fiction movie.
Enjoy !
